14 and 15 out, Finland and China
Today we are mailing out our 14th and 15th cards.
Ilmajoki, Finland: All I could really find out about this place, is that it is small, and there is a picture of a church but no description. It looks quaint.
Chaoyang, Beijing, China: Home of the 2008 Olympic Games. This is the district that hosted the games. What amazing history in the buildings!

13th Out, Istanbul, Turkey
I have learned that I'm falling in love with Istanbul!
Istanbul, Turkey - Historically known as Byzantium and Constantinople. It is the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents (Europe and Asia), Wow! It is also a "Global City" or "Alpha City" which are cities deemed to be important points in the global economic system (Thanks Wikipedia!). There are so many beautiful buildings here, one I've long admired is Hagia Sophia. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque or Blue Mosque is pretty spectacular as well. I remember learning about the famous aqueduct's in middle school history, and the 4th century Valens Aqueduct is in Istanbul. There is so much to learn and see here. I think we've found our first place to add to a list for a unit study!!!

11 and 12 Going Out, Latvia and Vermont
Today we are mailing out two postcards.
Riga, Latvia - It is interesting to learn about the old buildings and history. The Laima Clock, we learned is a famous meeting place. The Cat House, with it's insulting cat hindquarters built facing the enemies :). The beautiful Freedom Monument (Milda).
South Burlington, Vermont, USA - South Burlington is on Lake Champlain, and near Lake Placid, New York. This card is going to a university professor, who requested boring postcards (who knew?) and we are sending a postcard of the Spokane International Airport (GEG). When I saw this card at the store, I thought, who would want a postcard of the airport??? :) Now I know.

We have 32000 inhabitants. The roots of Nokia Corporation are here, but cellphone manufacturing is not here. We have rubber (foorwear, tires) and paper industries here left.
Have a great day!

We learned that the Nokia communications company was founded in Nokia, Finland (which was a huge surprise to me, I assumed Japan or China) We've owned 5 Nokia phones, and they were all awesome! Finland looks like it has TONS of water, it will be interesting to look at the surface characteristics a bit more.
